CP Gear Box Identity

Post by bunners »

Afternoon All
Can any of you chaps identify the gear box fitted to my 1946 G80?

It has the numbers G7C51 & 19 stamped on it, the bike was a total wreck when I got it and any sort of box may have been fitted at sometime. It does work ok but just wondering if it is the correct one for the bike.

Have a look in Christian's Archives : http://archives.jampot.dk/technical/Tra ... umbers.pdf:
Are you sure its not G1C52 ? Which is a 1951 G3L.

I really don't know. Other than it was made in March 1951. The numbers are a bit of a mystery. That list in the archives is just compiled from known gearboxes in North America. I'm not sure if anyone's tried to fathom out the numbers from UK owned bikes.

Thanks Dave
As I said it works and I do not count rivets so I can live with it.
It might not be off an AMC machine and just happened to be one of many in the breakers yard.

how about a photo of the whole box, or more importantly the gear change area. This may help in identifying the box

Hi

G7 identified gearboxes were fitted to Ariel models VG, VH and VB during 1946/7

Strangely G107 gearboxes were installed in the same models, 1951/2 - 'C51' would normally indicate the box was produced in March 51

1951 vb box.jpg

Top pic is a 1951 VB Box
Bottom pic is my G80 Box
a similarity for sure maybe the front on mine would fit the VB.
The main reason for asking the question in the first case was whether it should have
grease or oil as it is leaning more to a 51 so Oil it will be.
A 46 VG, VH, VB Box is totally different
