Engine sprocket felt washer

Post by Pharisee »

I've just stripped off the primary drive on my G80CS and there was a loose steel ring floating on the crankshaft axle between the engine sprocket and the crankcase. A little searching through the 1956 parts list revealed that on the competition models, a felt washer (part no. 012444) in a cage (part no. 021117) was fitted between the sprocket and the crankcase. I suspect that on my bike, the felt washer has long gone and the steel ring was the cage.
Neither part is listed in the AMOC Spares list nor is it listed in AMC Classic Spares lists (at least, I couldn't find them). Are they really necessary, or would it be safe to re-assemble the primary drive without them? I could probably find a bit of felt and make a new washer if needed.
