I think both should be ribbed.

Are you sure Dave? The rigid was not ribbed. The parts lists in the archives (and my paper copy) only cover the rigid models. The 1949 sales brochure references that the springer singles have the same frame as the 500 twin. The illustration does not seem to show ribbing on either the front or rear mudguard. The rear does have some valancing so its possible the rib was not illustrated. Roy Bacon's model timeline says "all ribbed mudguards" introduced 1950.

Bunners says it's a G80S which would be swinging arm.

As indeed were the pictures in the sales brochure. I only referenced rigids as it was interesting that the archives has no parts list covering the 1949 swinging.arm models. Roy Bacon's wrong too?

Something to consider.
Matchless 1949 G3/LS and G80/S were export only models, G9 was the only home market S/A model.
There were no 1949 AJS versions of the above models. They did not arrive until 1950.
There is still a question mark as to 1949 Matchless having ribbed guards.
Remember 1950 model production started September 1st 1949. So you could have a 1950 model registered late 1949.
Info from Glass check books.

Aha the plot thickens, mine is a swing arm with candlesticks, it also has the front brake plate anchor bolts, two off, on the left hand slider which according to Bacon was introduced in 1948 for a short time, how long is a short time?
Frame number 42209 which puts it half way between 23358 of 1948 & 35000 of 1949.
Date of first registration 01 01 1949.

Well Glass puts that no. as a 49 export only G80/S. Eng. no. would be 9000 upwards. As G80 but with S/A, 7" brakes 3 gallon tank. G80/S available in UK frame 4700 upwards.

My 1949 rigid model 18 came with what was left of a plain front mudguard , which I believe was the original. My 1950 rigid model 18 has the ribbed guards front and rear and the ribbed number plate mounting to match. So my money is on the plain mudguards. My 1949 also has the two bolt brake plate fixing onto the fork leg.
