Fork shrouds...
... which way up are they meant to be fitted?
Pictures in the usual places don't really make it very clear.
They're later 1-1/4" forks, if that makes a difference.
TIA

Neither does your description in the question
What part number item are you referring to? The slider extensions, fork cover bottom and top tubes are all pretty self explanatory.

I can only think that you must have the wrong ones. The earlier headlamp shrouds/brackets are parallel but the later 1 1/4" ones are tapered. The larger diameter goes at the bottom and sits in the alloy cup.

Hi
The diagrams of the forks in the Owner's Guides are generally better:

Re: Fork shrouds...
Thanks, I have the guides, but it doesn't help. Hence my post...
It's allegedly a 1954 bike.
The upper fork covers/shrouds are parallel. It's 10+ years since I took it to pieces. I wouldn't be at all surprised if there were wrong parts on it. But they're the parts that were on it when I bought it back in 2003 from our friend in Framlingham. When did fork stanchions grow in size? I did know once, but I've forgotten...
My question arises as the covers have an internal flange at one end but not the other. My guess at this point is that the flanged end goes uppermost, under the fork crown and with the nickel-plated cap over it, with the lower end sitting in the other cap with the rubber in it.
Or does it...

They should be 1 1/8" stanchions on a '54.

Re: Fork shrouds...
I don't think it matters on a '54. I'd put the flange to the bottom. Earlier models had 3 holes in the flabge and were screwed through the yoke and bottom shrouds to hold it all together. Think yourself lucky you haven't that type! I last did one of these in 1979 and that was built from bits so excuse the memory fade.
