Front fork break up

Post by RogGillingham »

Just when I thought I was making progress, front forks taken off and re-furbed and put back on - all with a struggle and borrowed tools I'm putting the mudguard and brake stay back on, doing up nuts and some of the fork breaks away where the nut goes in. Picture is attached (not great but shows the problem).
I'm assuming I've got to get a whole new fork or at least the bit with the threaded parts on.
Any help greatly received!!

You could get it Tig welded. I've had one done and it's very good. Cost was about £25 but good sliders are getting expensive.

Front Fork problrm

Post by RogGillingham »

I have just rebuilt the front forks on my 1951 18S with a lot of hassle and borrowed tools but on refitting the mudguard and brake stay when I was doing up the nut on one of the two studs in the forks some of the metal has broken away from around the stud exposing the thread and meaning the stud can't hold.
Looks like aluminium so I'm guessing it's got to be trying to source a new part for the forks as my only option.
Is that right, are there any other options and how easy is it going to be to find the part?
Any help greatly received.
Roger

As Dave says, it's not uncommon and we've all been there at some point, I have on several occasions. Once the ali is good and clean, and I mean clean! TIG welding will sort it. It's just a bloody faff having to strip it all down again! .

I had a similar (but not so severe) problem many years ago and a specialist company (then Flavells at Thornaby on Teesside) did it for me and it's been fine for 10,000's of miles.

Just a thought. Your two (duplicated)entries suggest different issues. One says "doing up nuts and some of the fork breaks away where the nut goes in." suggesting you mean bolt rather than nut whilst the other says "when I was doing up the nut on one of the two studs". The brake side should have studs and the other side bolts.

Just the one problem, I didn't phrase it very well. I've found FD Motorcycles in Dunmow Essex who are prepared to give it a go and I've been told know what they are doing with old bikes!
Many thanks for your help as usual.
