Dynamo Max Power ?

Post by asterysk_usa »

Could someone give me a rough guide to the max load the dynamo can sustain , assuming a refurbished standard dynamo (12v solid state AVR).

I should have experimented more before I stripped the bike down !

Which do you have? Neither produced very much power.
Fix it until it's broken!

Otherwise how will
anything get done?

Lucas said 45 watts for the E3N in the manual for E series dynamos.

PS Should be safe at 12v to a little more than that if need be.
There are no so-called '12v' finer wire winding options available off the shelf, as there are for the E3L(onger) ones, so you have to tolerate higher rpm for cut in.
E3N needs between 1250 and 1500 dynamo rpm to chuck out 7v with a small load on; running at 12v you'll need a few hundred more to get to cut in, and a few hundred more to support traditional lights.
So LEDs are the way forward if determined to run a short dynamo at 12v (in my humble).
The dyn runs at approx 1.25 x engine speed on singles (I think, if the sprockets are standard - which is the same gearing up as on the magdynamos the short E3s were also fitted to).
