Hairpin valve springs

Post by Pharisee »

There's a set of 3 coil valve springs just popped up on eBay, quoted as being for a 7R / G50. Would they be significantly different to the springs normally fitted in a road going 350/500 AJS or Matchless? I have need of a pair for my longstroke 500 and was wondering if these would be OK.

I may be wrong, but they should be fine. I don't think they produced those hair springs any stronger for the models quoted. I think the seller just mentions those so the ad comes up on searching. They don't appear to be to worn either.
Seem to remember yours were quite bad.

Advertise in the club mag for used springs with little sign of wear. Many would have changed springs thinking they would have weakened, but would have plenty of life still left in them. I have used kept as spares for my bikes.

Not sure they are what they claim to be with only 3 coils, certainly don't look like H/W springs which have 4 coils. Look at the picture on the parts home page and you'll spot several differences. 016962/3

They don't claim to be heavyweight springs.... The vendor says they are for the 7R /G50 OHC racing engines. Having had a closer look, they are significantly different to the springs fitted to the touring bikes and I suspect that they are what the vendor claims.

There were several different types of prewar AJS and Matchless hair pin springs. Those I have come across have long prongs. So I guess they are not prewar.
Note the springs in question have the prongs at equal distance between both. I am sure the heavy weights had prongs narrower one side, to go between the prongs the other side.

That's one of the significant differences... :)
