velded dynamo sprocket
Hi!
First post and new to the forum.
I recently bought a g80s. Today I started to take the engine apart for new seals, gaskets etc.
But the dynamo sprocket is velded to the nut.
Is this a common way to solve a problem or just made by a clown. What are your sugestions to fix this?
Can I just cut the pieces apart without hurt the dynamo?
I tryed to send a picture but I couldnt understand how.
Regards
Andreas

Re: velded dynamo sprocket
is it possible to see the weld? if so can you grind the weld off? I think cutting the pieces apart could risk damaging the dynamo. I think a clown has been at your bike!!

Re: velded dynamo sprocket
Not a 54'ish AJS is it . I know some one that had a damaged thread on an otherwise good dynamo. Such damage to the thread could be common by using a puller to try and get the sprocket off. It would be very difficult to cut the nut off. I think you have to except, if you can get the nut off, you will have to weld it back on again to continue using the dynamo, if the dynamo is OK. So perhaps if possible, leave it as it is, until such time you need to replace the armature. Then take an easier way to remove the nut. Perhaps by cutting the armature. Then on the bench get the nut off by drilling, chisel or flame, to reclaim the sprocket. You could perhaps try drilling to remove weld, but again, you would have to weld the nut on to continue using the dynamo. The reason it was welded on must have been because the thread was damaged.clive wrote:is it possible to see the weld? if so can you grind the weld off? Re: velded dynamo sprocket
Thanks for your replys.
I´m gonna try to grind the weld off and see if I can take the parts apart.
Rob, no it´s a 53 Matchless, but probably the same solution to the same problem.
I´m trying to post an image but don´t succed. Can someone explain please.

Re: velded dynamo sprocket
Welcome to the Forum, Andreas.
I understand that the nut is welded to the sprocket, not welded to the armature. If that's correct just get a new sprocket, Woodruff key and the correct sprocket fixing parts which comprise special nut, lockwasher and circlip.
EDIT:
If you haven't been able to remove the sprocket because the nut is welded to the sprocket and/or the armature I don't think you could cut the nut off as it will (should) be recessed in the sprocket. Yes, a photo would help to avoid guessing exactly what the problem is but only subscribing members can post photos.

One of those little Dremel type tools and a cutting disc are very handy.

Re: velded dynamo sprocket
alot of nice feedback, thanks.
Yes, the dremel will be handy tomorrow.
No previous experience with english motorcycles, so.
When I now look closely and look for new parts I understand that the nut is velded to the lockwasher.
Also it seems to be a regular nut. So the picture looks clear to me.
Instead of using circlip and specialnut, that fellow velded it together instead?

Re: velded dynamo sprocket
If it is welded to the lock washer that is only held in place by 2 tangs that fit into the slots. Once they are bent back or cut off it nay be possible to turn the nut.

yes Clive, thats true!
Now I just need new parts, but can´t find nut and washer here, just the circlip.
Need some google perhaps.

This is the nut, lockwasher and circlip that fit my '54 dynamo.....Now I just need new parts, but can´t find nut and washer here, just the circlip.
The lockwasher 000164 is available from Club Spares:
