I prefer a little slack in the brake pedal, which gives a softer feel. Hardly any free movement at all, its hard so requires more pressure that could result in rear wheel locking. When you only wanted to slow down a bit. I have one bike that has a bit of a hard feel, I over shimmed the shoes. So they only open up a bit to make contact with the drum. Before shimming I probably had the adjuster up, actually holding the shoes slightly open.
