Matt. If there isn't a V5 or Certificate the club's Dating Service is the only way to find out in what guise that frame left the factory.
Here's a '58 frame which could be for either an Ajay or Matchless single:

Matt your only way of being sure if it AJS or MATCHLESS, 350 or 500 single or twin frame is to pay for the cheap dating enquiry on the website. Then once you have bought it and built up the bike get the full dating cert. Alternatively bite the bullet and buy from a dealer such as Steven Surbey at AMC classics. He tends to sell them with a club dating cert so you know what you are buying. More expensive than that eBay item, and you will probably have to get the dating cert repeated because of the one year limit specified by DVLA nowadays but at least you will get the bike registered and not on a Q plate.

A bike has to be correct, you can only date the front half of a frame. I am sure the DVLA would insist a bike needs to have correct parts. If I had a 1955 frame part number 021704 factory literature would confirm that is the correct part for a 55/16MS also 55/G3LS. Very few parts can be proved to be AJS or Matchless. So I guess most of us have built bitzas, even though we have parts of the correct part number. We would have no idea what other parts started life as. As both marques had the same part numbers.
