Re: Wet Sumping of AMC Singles
Has anyone considered putting a drain tap in the drive side of the crankcase below the level of the breather pipe? When the oil is drained, a little would be left to "prime the pump". If the bike was ridden with it left open, no damage would be done.
I used to have a Swiss Simar rotavator with a crank case drain tap. Being a two strpke, it wouldn't start with petroil present.

Hi
The tap thought is OK but if it's left open it would be an open line into the crank case and would negate the function of the breather - it would allow air / rain / dust to enter the crank case.
Regards Mick

You'd probably get an oily foot too. That might remind you to close it. A lot less serious than forgetting to open a tap in the oil feed!Mick D wrote:Hi

I'm sure I read somewhere recently about a tap which connects to the ignition so that it drains but you can't start the bike with the tap open.

Sold by Andrew Dove in the Jampot mag adverts but it is an oil tap not a drain valve.

Just a comment, dave16mct notes we twin owners would faint at such a long time for oil to drain-down. My '59 G12 will empty its tank into the sump in about four days!!!! (and I fitted a good s/h pump as it was worse before.) Both my 18S do not wet-sump at all.
