Johnny B, could your sticking AR be due to a very slightly bent magneto shaft which might also explain the tight spot on the chain. Might be worth checking the shaft against a DTI for run-out? I also run a single coil spring washer under the magneto nut which allows for a good 'bite' on the sprocket during tightening, preventing any shaft/sprocket rotation, and alleviates the need for tapping the sprocket onto the taper.

Undoing magneto drive sprocket(s) with tyre levers/large screwdrivers as referenced in the manuals also strikes me as being a bit 'agricultural'. I have a very cheap slim jaw sliding two leg puller bought on-line which works great for pulling off either sprocket and fits behind the chain/sprocket at either end of the drive.

Apologies for hijacking your thread. Thanks for your patience.

All's improved over the last week.

I will take another look at the chain.

Rob - I took your previous advice and washed / worked the unit off the mag until petrol ran clear and then sprayed with WD40 before refitting.
