Removal of engine and gearbox from frame-55 18CS

Post by keje »

Hi folks!
Is there any useful link or any advices to help me remove engine and gearbox from frame.
Have stripped down transmission side and the top of the engine, footrests and oil lines.
Sorry to say I cant remember in what order to remove the big parts.
( Well it was fourty years since my last (successful) try.)

Most concerned in what order the pieces will go out of the frame.

Had a look at Christian Gydes site and found this: PDFWorkshop_Instruction_Manual_all_models_1957-1964__HIGH_RES.pdf

Is there more ifo to get?

Best Regards

For pre-duplex, (1960-up) you need to spread the frame at the front lower mount an inch or so to have enough clearance to pull the bottom end, assuming you are leaving the rear plates in situ. I block up the frame under the engine with the front wheel carrying the weight of the front end. Then remove all engine mount studs, the front lower last, & pull up on the front secton until sufficient room is obtained. It helps to have a couple of mates & a pint or two. Give them their share after the engine is out.
N.B. One of my books show the factory in the early post-war period. One man, apparently in his 70's, fitted the entire engine/gearbox assemby alone using the Armstong lift & that was the old, all iron top ends. A better man than I, Gunga Din!

Thanks Don!
I have got the engine out and apart by now, on its way for an overhaul.
Also the gearbox needed some attention so away it went.
I appreciate your tip cause I did not remember the easy way to just remove the engine.

Although I will have some beer in the garage, just in case...
