I presume this is a 500 single[?] You should have cams marked with an H or HL and if they are ,for 57 engines use as follows:
350cc 3 inlet, 1 exhaust all use the dash on the small pinion
500CC 2 inlet, 1 exhaust
previous to this 1954-55
350 3 inlet 2 exh.
500 2 inlet and 2 exh
If your cams are only marked 1 & 2 then you have even older cams, use 2 for both sides.
.
remember, suck, squeeze, bang ,blow when watching the cams work[:D]
give my regards to the reindeer![:)]

To add to Ken's advice, the dot on the halftime pinion is at the root of a tooth, if you can't see it, remove the nut, which has a left hand thread. When replacing the cams, turn the engine untill the halftime pinion dot points to the inlet cam bush, insert cam as per Ken's instructions and then rotate engine forward until dot faces the exhaust cam bush and insert cam.
You really should get the manual!!

Great stuff,
I think this confirms my understanding but I was greatly confused by the illustration in the Osborne Manual (fig 22). Which shows a 54-55 model using No1 mark to time the exhaust. Is this a typo?
