More valve advice please.

I only ordered this yesterday afternoon! Superfast delivery from AMC classic spares, cheers!
Now to be honset I've never delved into the delights of overhead valves before, Japanese bikes or two strokes only.
Can anyone give me some pointers as to how to use this to remove the springs. I am working on a 500 head with an earlier baseplate where the springs fit into it not on top, see other pic.
