16M Sceptre Carb
Good morning, does anybody know for certain the correct carb for the Sceptre? 389/27 is what's fitted but on the AMAL website (Burlen Ltd) it suggests a 376/5 is the correct model for a 16M same year as mine.

Hi Tom
The 389s were used on the short stroke 350s from '62 on - you should have a 376/5 with choke size 1 1/16" for a 1961 long stroke model. The club should be able to supply this pre-jetted and for a very reasonable price.

Re: 16M Sceptre Carb
Thanks for your help. After a few hours of digging and much head scratching I've found out that mine is the short stroke engine and as such it should be the 389 as you mention Reynard24. Mine is registered as 1961 but is a Scepter and definitely a short stroke. Sorry I'm new to classic bikes so all this uncertainty is new to me!! Must get a dating certificate from the club.

Hi Tom
The ultra short stroke Sceptre and its Matchless equivalent came out for the 1962 model year which would have started in late autumn 1961.
For dating a quick guide would be: For 1962 model you should have a duplex frame, petrol tank with large chromed badges and small "lightweight" type knee grips, wheels with 7 radial fins on the hub. 1963 model should be duplex frame, petrol tank with sculpted knee recesses and thin stick-on knee pads and large chromed badges, pear shaped tool box and oil tank, cigar shaped silencer and 5 radial fins on the hubs. 1964 model should be as '63 but with Norton forks and hubs and different internal engine dimensions but similar externally. Hope this helps - Dating officer Roy will be able to tell you exactly.
