AJS 16M gearbox

Post by vrossi46 »

Evening all. Can anyone let me know how to find the gearbox number on a 1956 model 16M. I think the 'box is a Burman. Need it for dating cert. Thanks in anticipation.

It's on the top, on the inner case. It'll probably be something like GB26D56.

AS Dave says, it's on top of the inner cover (under all the grease and dirt!!)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but only the amc boxes are recorded and therefore entered on the certificate.

The number dates this gear box GB 20 is unknown H 53 means made August 1953. Burman model year was Jan 1st to Dec 31st. unlike AMC Sept 1st to Aug 31st So the box would have been used on 53 / 54 model.

Clive... With respect, my gearbox GB20 isn't 'unknown'. It's the original gearbox fitted to my '54 model G3LS (dispatched from the factory in September '53). I have a letted from the dating officer, Mr Bellett, confirming this fact. I will reproduce part of that letter... I hope Mr. Bellett doesn't mind.

GB 20 unknown to the many what model it fitted. It's good factory records for your bike have survived. So I advised the Burman code was for 1953. I was only referring to the gearbox code, not your bike. Which you told us all was 1956 AJS . Now you are saying the bike is 1954 Matchless.

Read the post again Rob, John was referring to his G/box which is a 54. The original poster had the 56 gearbox.
