1959 G3 AFS Rebuild .

Post by daz3226 »

So the journey begins ......
I purchased a project last year on eBay and finally getting around to starting it !!
I purchased the bike in bits ,in 1979 the previous owner having stripped a good running machine for restoration.
He had sent off bits for paint and chrome and stripped the engine and gear box , there are a few no's bits in the collection too .
It was nice to read through the newspaper from 1979 that the painted bits were wrapped in . On inspection most of the bits have survived !!
I have also purchased a 1960 ajs M16 to use as a doner .
The first job I have tackled is to start reassembling the frame ,
Swing arm bearings in and tubevpressed home

Looking good. Seems like it is mainly a re-assembly job although looks can be deceiving.

I look foreward to your updates.

Isn't the crank supposed to be inside the engine?

Hah!

I spent this afternoon playing with the gearbox parts trying to get my head wrapped around what goes where.
I see your pile of gears and parts looks like what I have.
Let us know how you make progress!

So the first job , get the swing arm sorted ,
I had initial problems lining it all up without trapping the felt washers , but saw a couple of posts mentioning it's easier when they are compressed , so I soaked them in oil , (in a plastic bag the compressed them in a vice for an hour , they slipped on loverly ....
See pics .

I used the threaded bar with washers nuts and socket method to press the bushes in and the swing arm pin.
