Can anyone tell me what the size and thread is on the magneto drive shaft as some of the threads are burred and I need to buy a die to clean them up.

The thread is 3/8" BSF. You should have no problem getting a suitable die to clean up the damaged thread.
Good luck, Bob.

I have always imagined that the shaft was hard or even tough. never gave it much thought. before you go to the expense of getting a die, rub an old file across the thread to see how soft it is.

I would spend the money on a thread file. Not good engineering I am sure but it's saved many threads for me. I also find it difficult to start a die if the thread is damaged and end up bu**ering it up. (Guess that's a warning I am the sort of previous owner that causes proper engineers to tear their hair out.)

Not hard steel - or hard to do - a thread file will clean it a bit, a die will clean it nicely - as long as there is metal there to clean!

Sorry it has taken me so long to come back to this thread so thanks for all the comments. I borrowed a die from a friend and the thread cleaned up nicely but
before that I tried using a small file without success. The nut is now sitting where it should be quite happily!
