G3 seems sorted now

Post by Roey »

Had some quite heavy oil leaks and and low compression on my recently acquired 1961 G3. Ordered full gasket set, stripped down to see the valves needed lapping and then further on to find one compression ring broken but still in situe and the other compression ring stuck tight in it's groove. Oil ring seemed fine. Anyway, ordered a new +40 set from Cox &Turner ( really helpful company to deal with and next day delivery). Took me forever to clean out the grooves on the piston so to enable the new rings to fit but once done and all rebuilt using new gasket set the bike is so different. Nice compression, pulls so much better and no oil leaks! 😀

Did you use the old trick of grinding a broken ring like a chisel, the other end pushed into a hole drilled in a suitable piece wood to make a handle. To form a scraper tool ? The tool being a prefect fit in the piston groove, to clean it

Hi Rob, I did just that but made a handle from insulating tape 😋
