The stamped numbers and letters denote year- 1940 type G3 and then the serial number. This of course does not give an accurate date of the motorcycle, this is found with the frame number. Unless it's just an engine that you have!

A civvi G3 would be quite rare, the engine may had been used on a 40/G3 WO. A girder fork machine, after which the 41/G3L followed with tele forks. Frame number may confirm/ the model. The 40/G3 was a clubman model, a parts list was produced showing parts that differ from 1939. There was no sales cat. for 1940 Matchless offering a civvi range.

If you only have the engine then the year is 1940. Only the 41/G3L may not read true. All the WD G3L's were stamped 41. However the number would tell the WO contract and date the contract was delivered.

The engine is a mixture of years. I would not have had the alloy head with hairpin springs in 1940. WO is not here so not WO . You will find the bottom end has a valve lifter in the right hand crank case, the later alloy rocker also has a valve lifter. Not sure about the barrel, which could be dated approx. by the pt. no. cast on the bottom left hand flange. Gear box may also be dated by its number.
