As a first time rebuilder of a WD G3L I'm wondering what the best combination of oil pipe solid/ flexible and dimensions of unions and so on. Is there a definitive good practice?

Re: Oil pipe combinations
I believe you will see from parts lists the oil pipes were all metal. Unions connected pipes to the engine and oil tank. In post war years the pipes cut just below the oil tank. Joined with rubber hose. I assume the rubber pipe was to absorb vibration, to prevent vibration causing factures at the solder joints. Later still the oil tank just had short pipes coming from the tank. Rubber joined the metal pipe directly on the tank pipes. So the choice is yours, All metal as WD or spilt the metal pipe and join with rubber hose to help stop fractured joints.
