Need some guidance installing a carb on 47' G3L

Post by nathancitox »

Hi,

I've had one of my motorcycles with an asian carb since I rebuild it.
It's working fine but now I finally got the exact model of carb for a 1947 Matchless G3L, an AMAL 76D/1J.

Can anyone give me some guidance on setting the carburetter? Like needle position, how to set the air screw, etc.

Thanks!

Not checked if it is the correct carb. However, that means little if it has not got the correct parts in it for your bike. The Amal cat's will tell you what slide needle and jets etc. it should have. When you get the carb fitted with all the correct bits in it, refer to your bikes Instruction book on setting it up. I asum you did get parts list instruction book etc. when you first got the bike.

If you have got the relevant handbooks & parts books, you should be able to find them on here:-

http://archives.jampot.dk/

The owners handbook should give you the details of basic settings as a starting point.

Thanks for the replies, very appreciated.
I've checked the main jet and it says 150, throttle is 6/4, bore is 1 inch.

That Numbers matches what it says on the manual I have for my motorcycle.
I'm not sure about the needle, how should I measure it?

Hi

You appear to have purchased a used carb so the settings are a bit arbitrary due to previous wear.

I'd suggest fitting it as is and seeing how it performs - fine tune on performance

Thanks Mick,

I've installed it and it works great, need to tune it a bit.
Now I need to fix a couple of oil leaks that appeared on my last trip, not sure if I could replace the cylinder head and valve cover gaskets without removing the engine from the frame. I'm going to check the manual.

Thanks!!
