Gear lever
Any idea if the Burman gear lever is meant to be shorter than the AMC lever.
Mine seems to be 1" too short on the Burman, and the lever on the AMC box is 6" from centre of fixing to max length.
I see there are some on eBay, but shown in 19 and 17mm. I guess that's the thickness?.

Re: Gear lever
Mike,
Just been out into a cold garage for a quick measure. Two G3 bikes both with B52 g/box's. One a 53 and the other a 54 bike. Lever length measured from centre of shaft to front of end tang. Near as dammit 5.1/2 inches. OK maybe a fraction over, tricky to measure with greater accuracy as end rubber is fitted. Definitely not 6" when measured from the g/box shaft centre.
Try to find a good second hand part. I have seen some horrible reproduction parts, quite rough cast aluminium and poorly finished. I'm sure you aware a cast lever of poor quality will not withstand any significant abuse, (typical motorcycle boot), without snapping.
I'm pretty sure that the last bike I had with the AMC g/box, the g/lever was chromed steel not aluminium. That was on a 63 G3.

Re: Gear lever
Thanks Ade,
it looks as though I have the correct lever then, just seems a bit tight to get boot between footrest and gear lever, moved gear lever and footrest different ways.
Even with trainers the distance is not as comfortable to change gear as with the AMC boxes.
I may try another footrest off another bike,
Thanks again,
(bikes in cold garage) Wot no heater!!!!!

Re: Gear lever
Hmm. Tried rotating the foot rest back a bit?
Burman boxes are all very slow to change gear compared to the AMC box. Chalk and cheese. The B52 just need a slow steady pressure on the lever. I usually tell new riders of these old bikes with a Burman box, to slowly count one, two, three as they change gear. This seems to work as they don't then try to do quick gear changes.
How big are you feet?
I bet you are wearing those big circus clown boots aren't you?
Blimey that was cold riding yesterday. By comparison the garage is mildly chilly.

Re: Gear lever
Ang on a minute, I,m going mad, just rechecked measurement of my Burman gear lever and it,s length from centre shaft to tang is 4 1/2" so that is my problem, so looking for a proper one.
Anyone recommend a good original for sale, or good new.
