Hi Michael,
For what it is worth I had a similar problem two years ago with my G3LS
After spending many hours at the side of the road I checked the pick up from the mag and found it to be covered in wax from the windings cleaned and dried have not had any problems starting cold or very hot on summers day since.Hope this helps.
Regards
Stuart

Good advice from Stuart.
If you check over all the pickups and springs, carbon brushes etc and don't find anything, but it will start cold, then it is likely that the condensor inside the maggie is bad. Difficult hot starting is a classic sympton of this malady. If it was rebuilt using anything less than a modern replacement for the tired old type used in the "good old days", then I would be having words with the maggie rebuilder...
hopethishelps,
Rohan.
