M&B, AMCs supplier of forgings ?

Post by Rohan B. »

AMC frames of the late 1940s at least had a stamping into the left side of the steering head that says something like M&B 012559.

Now the 012559 is likely the factory number for the steering head, but the question is - who were M&B ? Are they/were they the suppliers of forgings to AMC ? Do they still exist ? Anyone around who could provide an inkling into this ? AMC must have had 1000's of such forgings - literally tons and tons of em.

Keith originally raised this question on the Ajay/Matchy Yahoo chatlist, with the stamped sequence on the headstock (of a G3/L) of W41 G3L F1, which is obviously somewhat related to the G3/L framenumber part of 41-G3L-F23 (in the 1947 AJS PartsList book at least). Presumeably each casting/forging had such a number in a factory list/drawing, even if it wasn't on each individual part...

Curiously,
Rohan.

Vast quantities of such forgings were and are produced here in the Midlands area. [;)] Sorry to say however that without some research the only M&B's that come to mind are Mitchells & Butlers a well known midland brewer. Marsh & Baxter a once well known maker of sausages and pork pies. May & Baker a major competitor in the manufacture of popular medicines and pills to the better known Boots the Chemists. Mills & Boon well known for publication of vast quantities of romantic books written mainly for the ladies. [:)] [:)] [:)]

No research done yet.[V] But another thought. [;)] Having once been a tool designer for a company that produced upset forgings (Wheel Nut tools and other similar things) I dont think these parts could be produced using forging techniques, perhaps they are Malleable Iron Castings[?] Could it then be that because of some weird requirement by the Ministry of Defence (MOD) such parts have to identified as Malleable & Brazed or M&B[?]
