What do you want from the replacement battery? To be smaller, lighter, larger capacity or to fit in the original battery box? I have been doing some work on the smaller lighter theme and have found the UPS type batteries to be very good on other applications but have been put off using them on the bike due to the predictions of doom in the Jampot.

The spares scheme offer a good replica battery, exide or whatever and you can get from most auto jumbles and specialist older bike spares suppliers. Only problem can only be posted in dry uncharged state so you would have to take to a battery specialist to fill and charge if bougt by mail order.

UPS Batteries are designed for UPS (Uninteruptable Power Supplies) that means a slow consistent and highly controlled method of charging. Most importantly a vibration free working environment. Now ask your self do you think they would be suitable for use in an old motorcycle?

I'm sorry to hi-jack Stuarts help forum.
But in reply Eric, I agree its the vibration that has worried me and stopped me using it on my British bike, as I think the charging can be sorted out be some modern electronics (although it is not as straight forward as I first thought). I am still tempted to give it a go as I have had one fitted to my non-British bike for the last six years and there is a size advantage.
Has any one tried it?
Do the batteries explode like the ones fitted to early 916s?

I will not use anything other than the Burlen type solid pure battery they are brilliant. CMES sell them as well I have had no end of dynamo problems due to standard batterys braking down and taking too much charge until I switched to this type. My bike is a 1955 AJS 18s which is used daily all year round.
