Hi Pete
Excuse my ignorance but is this the AMC box?
A shim should be obtainable from most automotive engineers/ engine reconditioners. despite the fear that most owners have of dismantling gearboxes they are actually very easy to strip. If you go to a section meeting there will be someone who can explain it and may even help you!
AMC gearboxes are much better than most of the period. My Triumph is a pig to find neutral, using involving stalling the bike to stop the engine and then engage it. The AJS one is a sweetie.[:)]
