Exhaust pipe to silencer depth

Post by Richard Hyatt »

Hi all , bike is G2 1961.
We've recently bought a new pipe and silencer from armours. Beautiful chrome.
But the question is the depth of penetration of the pipe into the silencer when assembled.
It seems to go on and on before all fixing points line up and off hand I'd say 9 inches or so.
Is this correct depth please ? Usually they only just slip on for a couple of inches then clamp up.
Thank you

Must admit it doesn't sound right to me - you'd think that half of the silencer is being bypassed - would it be quieter if the downpipe was shorter?

This is what I'm wondering ?
I need to remove the silencer and measure the depth of the first baffle. For all I know the exhaust gas is getting held back or strangled.

You will not find a baffle. originally the pipe extended into the silencer and had the end sealed and slots
cut into the pipe, thus reducing the noise these days what you get is a straight through system, feel free
to block the pipe and cut slots if you wish. It will take the edge off of the noise but over done can also
take the edge off of the performance.

That's a really good idea to revert to original.
I can weld a plate over the end and angle grind a series of slots in the end few inches.
It has a real crack from this new exhaust , nice but a shade antisocial
