Hope that little bodge will do the job for you. I was not sure if it would, as sometimes its not easy to try and relate to what a person's problem is. I would add. When a cable breaks go for the one Rob S ( combiman ) suggests. That's a Barrel end nipple cable. If its possible to do so. When cutting the slit mentioned, the cable wire must easily pass through. I'm sure I recall Hack saw bit thicker than a junior hack saw is still too tight. If you have a very small Triangular file, you may be able to get inside plus outside, to open up the slit. don't try bending open with a using a chisel as a wedge. The part you are making will roll away. I drill hole in a bit of wood big enough to allow it to open a bit. Put in the hole and attack both ends. Bit of wood with the hole may also come in handy to hold Bullet connectors when soldering wire in. The wood will not take away heat from the soldering iron.
