A couple of bits I came across may be of interest.
Firstly a link to an article about a 7R, but at the top of the second page is a picture of a Lightweight racing bike.

Secondly a picture found on the internet of what looks to be the same bike.

Excellent info John! That G2 pic clearly shows the tacho drive and the location of the rearsets, something that's not visible on the other photos I've seen.
I can also see an adjustable steering damper. Surprisingly, it still has a dual seat! The battery and kickstart seem to have been removed to save a bit of weight...

Geoff the G2 Race bike was a one off special order and built around the first CS Scramble bike ' Hence no battery as this bike had the A1 Electronics Scintilla energy transfer ignition of the early CS bikes ' Later replaced with a varley battery and alternator ' Due to difficult starting ' not a problem bump starting the kickstart less racer ' The seat is the early white seat used on the 59 CS models ' The short Police seat would not fit as the rear subframe was wider and the top shock mounts fouled the seat ' The Revcounter was first used in this form on the factory VGY250 Matchless G2 with an extended points cover and a smiths drive fitted to this off the end of the points . This bike was used for motorcycling magazines mile a minute challenge around silverstone 400 miles non stop @ 60 mph ' Riders Bruce main smith and John Griffith, some good pictures of this in jampot 401 1986 worth a look
