Hi there i brought a indian enfield two and a half inch unit which fits perfectly, if you are not too much bothered about authenticity.
You will need the enfield speedo cable as its a different fit from normal.
Also to get the speedo to show the correct road speed you will also need a rear wheel speedo drive also from enfield. It was all very cheap direct via fleabay.
just checked its
eBay item number:
201676759691
£18.50 inc postage
Cheers

Re: best place to get a new speedo for my G2CSR
Hi and thanks for that... im fine with using other bits from other bikes as it sometimes seems all you can do as you cant get much out there for the Matchless lightweights now that's sad but how it seems to be... so im for it if i cant get the correct part now my speedo drive is on the rear wheel so does that not work with the parts you are talking about ? or is it you just did not have that on your bike ? what model enfield was the part for and many thanks

Tried one of the Indian speedos, complete rubbish. It wouldn't calibrate the speed correctly and after 4 mths it fell to bits. It was fitted to a 500 twin and was the larger 120 mph model but still wouldn't buy one again.

Wouldn't Bri need a speedo that goes to more than 80mph for his sporty CSR?Rangy65 wrote:Hi there i brought a indian enfield two and a half inch unit which fits perfectly, if you are not too much bothered about authenticity.

Re: best place to get a new speedo for my G2CSR
Hi , there was no specific model i just searched for replica smiths 2-1/2 inch speedo - taking Janets tongue in cheek reference to speed you can get one of these speedo's that shows 120MPH!! plenty fast enough on any lightweight.
I did not know about the cable so ended up buying one from the UK top enfield specialists (can't say cos i might be advertising). When i used the speedo with my original 2:1 ratio drive unit it was way out but actually pretty accurate.
Let me explain - i used my car sat nav attached to the tank and on a quite back road compared the speed on both. At an indicated 30 MPH on the satnav the speedo showed 50 - at 40 -60 at 50 -70 and 60 -80.
So the deduction was that the new speedo needs a different ratio drive unit to make it work i.e 15:12 rather than 2:1. ( i am sure someone will come along who knows much more about speedo drive ratios than me and will put me right)
Major confession here i did not source a different drive unit just marked the glass at 50 MPH with a small bit of tape so i would remember!! 50 = 30. Had it running like this for about 3 months but put the original speedo back when it came back from repair.
If this is all a bit too much the alternative is BSA bantam or other small capacity machine s/hand speedo. There is a 100 MPH Ariel Arrow speedo on EBAY right now starting at £24.
I will be using my indian speedo again on lightweight number 3 eventually once the 2nd one is finished and the G3 is fixed!!
Cheers
