Alloy yoke studs

Post by BultacoBen »

My 'scramblered' lightweight 250 CSR has at some point had an alloy yoke fitted. Those more knowlegeable than I tell me it is "competition style" and more in-keeping with the scrambler look...

It uses four studs and nuts to keep the handlebar clamp clamped rather than three pinch bolts as on the standard yoke. On one of these studs the thread is very poor and looks prone to imminent failure. Does anyone know the part number or a similar stud that would be interchangeable? Being non-standard I've struggled to find any reference in the manual or on the spares site.

Hi

You will need to provide more details I'm afraid. At a minimum an accurate indication of stud diameter, (measured over the threaded portion), the number of threads per inch and the total length of the stud. If the thread is different at each end of the stud, which is likely, you will need to detail both. The size across the flats of the securing nut will also help.

Ben

Is it the same as this (see page 32, 013629 & 013631): http://archives.jampot.dk/book/Spares_l ... ingles.pdf

If so a thread insert may be the best approach with a standard stud (012870, page 34)

The thread is 1/4 whitworth in the yolk, simply buy a v-coil or helicoil insert kit from that wonderful internet auction/selling site.

Brilliant Duncan, that's exactly the one! Many thanks :D

It's indeed the stud whose thread is failing on the nut end (the 26 tpi not the 20tpi end) rather than the yoke's so yes a replacement stud is what I'm after rather than a helicoil kit.

Now to find a source... Neither spares nor Andrew engineering seem to recognise the part number.

Nope, it's 012870 stud that helps clamp the bars to the yolks and we don't stock it. It's 1 17/32" long 26tpi for the nut and 20 tpi screwed into the yolk. You could use 010625 inlet manifold stud and alter it's length to suit, it's 1 11/16" long but you should be able to trim it down and we do stock that one.

There are a few suppliers of 20/26 tpi studs on the web.
I've used Motalia in the past - they seem to have a good range of stainless steel studs.

Have found a source; Steve at AMC Classic Spares has just commissioned a small run from a stud manufacturer so will shortly have some in stock, hopefully by the end of October.

Thanks for the suggestion of the inlet manifold stud to bide me over until they come, ajscomboman. Have only just learnt the trick of getting a good thread on a shortened bolt/stud...

i.e. cut the excess off with a nut already on the bolt/stud, then unscrew the nut which will help straighten out any threads which have been misaligned.
