Technical Articles

Post by Eamonn Townsend »

Within the Technical Articles area, there is a list of all articles included within the last few years of Jampot magazines. We have a growing number of articles to read, but we still have many that are not yet available for viewing.

If you have access to the original article and can help in scanning or re-typing it, we would be most grateful for your help. If the article is all text, you can submit the details directly on this website - just choose the 'Submit an Article' link (within the Tech.Articles area) and we'll do the rest. If there are embedded pictures or if you prefer to email the article, send an email to me.

I'm happy to receive the information in (pretty much) whatever format people can do - my preference is to receive a word processor type file (MS-Word, MS-Works, etc) with any attached images as separate JPG files. An idea as to where the image should go in the article would also be useful!

Eamonn,
would it be possible to list the technical aricles, indicating which ones still need to be converted? At the moment you have to enter each topic to find out their status. This is time consuming, and really just plain annoying.

Otherwise great new site!

I have been trying to find out why the majority of the Tech. articles are not avaliable for viewing. I would think if we know of the existance of a article, we have a copy of it. If there is a copy, why can't it be scaned into the computer. Even if a scaned copy is hard to read it is better than not having it avaliable.

Eamonn,
'Nuance' make an optical character recognition software package - Omnipage, currently at OCR 15, I believe. I am still working with OCR 10 which I used when gainfully employed, to convert general company procedures into specialised ones, by scanning the original, making changes on screen and saving as a new file. It worked fine, sometimes misreading an odd word or two, but easy to find and correct. There are a number of other similar software packages out there, but Omnipage was reckoned to be a market leader by a number of publications.
With one of these packages and the required article to scan its easy, peasy. Unfortunately, I do not have any of the technical articles, or I would be able to help out. (Phew! that was a near one!) Edited by - deshollier on 28 Jun 2007 12:31:06 PMEdited by - deshollier on 28 Jun 2007 12:41:00 PM

I guess I was trying to say that if a article exists, then we should be able to make it available, if it is not available, then why list it--- or just put it in a unavailable place (folder).
Possibly I an missing why do we list articles that are unavailable? So we can get them reproduced? When a article is suggested, a copy (whatever is required) should be supplied. The ones from Jampot Mag's should be very easy to scan, I am assuming the club has copies of all old Jampots.

If I remember correctly when the idea of putting old articles on the website can up and some of us started to re-type/copy them, not all were available so those who had any would copy the ones they had. Clearly articles in an electronically compiled Jampot are available. It is possible to have a list of all articles without having the things themselves.

So the reason there isn't a full set on here is a) some may not still exist and b) those of us who volunteered to do some copying were too lazy to retype every article and they were not all suitable for scanning. therefore we only did what you see there.

Why have the list? Because someone might see a title and would like sight of it. If it's not there they could ask if anyone still has their copy.

An increasing number of members have scanners. Those who do could certainly use an optical character recognition package (OCR) to retyre the old articles, but if you have a scanner it's much simpler to scan to PDF (portable data file).

A double A5 page scanned from an A5 format Jampot at 300 dpi (dots per inch) would produce a file of approximately 1.1 Mbytes. Photo quality would be excellent (depending on scanner and software). However, that's a large file to load on the website, so you could scan at 100 or 150 dpi and produce a much smaller file that should still give reasonable image quality.

I'm sure that Eamonn can advise on optimum file size for uploaded PDFs. I simply send him anything and he works the magic.

As I am currently involved in doing this, I would like to know if others are 'at it' I would hate to type umpteen words, only to find out it has already been done.
