If 1959 then the number EK0 158 should be 158 EKO.

Hi Mick,

I'm reasonably sure he bought it new.....but I'll check.

Hi Hedge

That would lead one to believe he is confused over the registration and it's potentially a 59 bike with a registration of 158 EKO - which would have had rear swinging arm suspension.

If there are no photos it might be an idea to ask your Dad how old the bike was when he bought it - there's a 21 year gap between the two possible registrations so even if his memory is not what it was, (who's is?), he could probably guide you in the right direction. An answer to 'did the bike have rear suspension' would confirm 38 or 59.

It would confirm 38 or 59. But not thats not a golden rule for all pre war years. Some Matchless models had rear suspension in the 1930's. See May Jampot page 20 2nd & 3rd picture down, note the springs seen under the saddle of the early 30's Silver Hawk. There's also an adjustment damper. Bit like post war Vello adjuster.

Hi all,

An update.

First thing - & apologies for this - but the plate is wrong!!

It is: 158 ENO

So, wild goose chase has been going on.....sorry chaps. My Dad is “fairly” certain about this. Hmm.

Next.

Dad bought it new in 1954/5 & sold it around 1963. Supplied by either Rivetts or Reads (!) in High Road, Leytonstone. The guy who bought it went to school in West Hatch, Essex, so presumably lived in that area.

It was a G80S 500 single cylinder.

Probably more to come....!

Cheers,
Hedge
