KKJ10L Matchless G85cs

Post by tony »

Hello, does anybody have any information on a G85CS I bought from croatia. It was UK registered and the number was KKJ10L. The bike had MP froks and single sided front brake, it also had lights. I am putting it back to original trim but would like to know any history. I also need a standard G85CS petrol tank. Thanks

The L suffix is in the UK is a 1972 number. In 1972 in the UK it was not possible to get an earlier number allocated to the bike if you were registering it (changed much later) so possible reasons for the number are as follows

The original registration number had been sold and this was the replacement number given or
The Bike was assembled from parts and registered in 1972 or
The registration documents were lost and the bike re-registered (I had a 1949 G80 which had been re-registered with an S registration) or
The bike was exported and re-imported into the UK in 1972 or
The bike was never sold and stayed in stock until 1972

All the best in finding more about its history

I endorse Clive's comments, with a little added info. KKJ was a Kent reg. no. series issued in 1972/1973 with a L surfix. The number series started on August 1st 1972 from KKJ 1L up until July 31st. During this time the series may had reached KKJ 999L, resulting in the series ending before July 31st. The series would had ended 31/7/73 at what ever number was reached.
Considering the number is KKJ 10L then you could say with almost 100% certainty, the bike was registered August 1972.
You could try. Kent History & Library Centre, James Whatman Way, Maidstone, Kent. for information of the 1972 registration of KKJ 10L
