Hi Dave, yes there should be a spacer between the head steady plate and the frame. You can use flat washers if your desperate.

The reason for this is because the frame and engine postion are the same for 500, 600, & 650 engines but the barrels get taller, so bigger engine smaller spacer. Flat washers will do the trick OK.
