Rear brake problem

Post by anntrex »

Hi.
Can anyone advise on a braking problem please.
I'm working on my Grandson's 2016 Cadwell, which unfortunately hasn't been serviced since new.
Rear brake Master Cylinder rusted solid , scrapped. New one on order.
Rear brake caliper pads metal to metal. Scrap. New Disc fitted. replacement pads bought.
QUESTION:- When fitting new brake pads to the caliper, do the SHIMS fitted to the original Pads have to be fitted to the new pads?
I can't find any information relating to my question, or anyone selling these parts.
Assistance would be much appreciated.

Welcome, Peter.

There is a Haynes manual (No. 4871) which covers 125cc Chinese bikes as most are very similar:

I've had a quick look at mine and it says when shims are fitted to refit them ensuring that they are correctly fitted according to the arrows on them.......:

You might get a better response if you posted in the 'Modern AJS' section:

Hi.Spriddler,
Yes, I had seen and read that part, but it dosn't relate to my caliper, ours is a single cylinder.
Our caliper is part number 1610101-304000. sorry to be precise, in the AJS Catalogue.
It also shows the pads but no shims, plus, if I fit the shims, then I can't get the caliper on the wheel
Not sure where to go next.
But, thanks for you response

So the pad was previously worn to the metal and in order to do so a shim had been fitted. You now have a new disc and pads and the they don't fit if you include the shims which are not shown in the AJS catalogue? Well I would fit it all without the shims and test it as this seems the most logical conclusion, but what do I know, I am still fiddling about with 5 1/2 inch single leading shoe brakes from the 1940's!

Hi. Clive.
Thanks for your comment
I'm slowly coming round to that way of thinking, suck it and see.
But, I had to ask the question.

I think the shims we're talking about are actually anti-squeel not spacers.

That's why they are fitted on cars to eliminate brake squeal.
