Petseal Ultra

Post by spookefoote1956 »

I put some petseal ultra in project kate's tank the other week. Put fuel in today and the inside feels sticky. That can't be right? :o :o :o

Nope - Why would you want to put a sealant into a brand new tank?

Ethanol scare victim? ;)

It was a belt and braces job Mick. Could do with advice as to how to get the stuff out of the tank without damaging the paint.

Sealeater is by far the best stuff Ive used, but it needs care not to get it on the outside of the tank. Have plenty of soapy water on hand for the odd splash and never get close enough to the filler to breath in the fumes - its nasty with a capital N. If you want to seal the tank then POR15 is the easiest to use and Ive done quite a few tanks for other folk too. Petseal blotted their copy book for me with the garbage they sold years ago that's still causing problems.

Cheers Steve. Have you tried acetone or is that a step too far?

Now the fuel is out the lining is less sticky. Is an option to let it harden then overcoat it with "Slosh" or is that just plain stupid?

You already know the answer to that.

Acetone will probably remove it but you won't be able to stop it wicking under the paint at the orifices - give it a go but just drain from the fuel tap orifice(s) and be prepared to do some touch up.

How long did you let it cure for?, do you have any accelerator/hardener left over? - It may be possible to continue the curing process by heating and ventilating the tank or even better heating the tank closed with surplus accelerator/hardener inside. By heating I mean around 30 degrees C.

I think that acetone/cellulose thinners (gun wash) will do no more than soften it and cause more problems. You should be successful with the sealeater - but like I said before, just be careful. Use rubber gloves and wear long sleeves - the tiniest splashes can really start to sting. If you start by just pouring in half the bottle and then cover the filler to slow down any evaporation it'll be fine. Don't tightly seal the tank because it does vaporise in there and can soon build up pressure and blow out a bung (don't ask how I found that out  ). You'll be able to hear it working as the sealant begins to crackle and shrivel up.
Good luck.
