Which is the correct barrel

Post by Invicta »

I have three cylinder barrels that came with my basket case model 18's one 1949 and one 1950. Two of the barrels are identical and have the reduced finning at the lower front and the third one does not. Can anyone tell me which barrel is the one for the 1949. All are on std. bore with very little wear. I understand that the finning was reduced in the front to give better clearance for the magneto after 1954. It would appear if this is the case that the two barrels with the reduced finning are not correct for either 1949 or 1950. Any advice on which is correct would be appreciated.

Looking at the sales brochure for 1949 it looks like it isn't cut away.

The SR1 mag intrduced on the 500 in '54 needed more room so the barrel was cutaway.

The same part number for the AJS cylinder (010948) is shown in the Parts List for '46, '47 and '48.
The 1949 was 013842. (Which seems to be a 'one year only').
The '50 and '51 (and perhaps ongoing) was 013843.
(The Matchlesses had the mag behind the cylinder).
FWIW this is my '47 Mod 18 (original) cylinder...

As possible further i.d. up to '55 (I think) the cylinders had additional bore lubrication....(my '54 has them but I've blanked off the feed).
