Identification and any other info

Postby Eamonn » Wed Nov 13, 2019 12:46 pm

I've had an email asking if there is anything special about this bike. The picture is from around 1942.
I'll pass on any extra information people can come up with.

Info on the net appears to indicate ...

GNE xxx would have been issued in Manchester in or after 1943 .. see http://www.oldclassiccar.co.uk/registrations/ne.htm

Early 40's G3L ?
She's possibly a Land Girl, pic taken whilst she was posted on a farm?

Does the engine still have a brass 'Services' engine number plate?

Telle forks arrived on war time G3/L all seem to have 41 stamped on the engine. Correct year when they were actually made is stated on the wartime Contract for a batch of machines. It may state so any by ? date, followed by ? ? ( various contract delivery expectations ) The picture may have been taken after the war, when many workers used surplus uniform clothing, as there was a shortage of clothing.

Looks like a 1945/46 bike to me:
All black forks
Bolt on rear lifting handle
"M" transfer on petrol tank
No mask on headlight.

I think you're spot on Duncan. Having seen the number had been checked I did not bother doing so. However, having hinted the picture may have been taken post war, due to army surplus clothing used up by workers, I have now checked. Yes GNE 1943 number. Started in April 1943 commenced with GNE 1, I assume, but that is not factually stated. 1944 started GNE 152. 1945 started GNE 494. The GNE series ended September 1945. Having only just started production on 1946 models in September, I think we can say it's 1945 model. If we knew the machine numbers, it may be possible to check if it was an intended WD model. Any WD contracts running at that time may have been canceled. THe unwanted bikes put out on the civvi market. Some one mentioned a WD plate on the engine. Thats possible, as it may have been ready to dispatch the bike to what ever WD unit it was intended for. It is a Manchester number. Check out if Manchester archived their numbers and perhaps discover more history. If not archived by Manchester. Don't give up, Manchester may have archived their numbers with the Kithead trust. Sorry I'm not very well at the moment to research more. You'll find what you are looking , if archived, taking the steps I have mentioned. Search Kitheadtrust on the net. I see no mention where Manchester CBC may have archived records.

Had a prob after I was discharged and got taken in Hos again. Two Docs failed to bodge me up so had to call a specialist who succeeded. So I don't leak like my old bikes anymore.
