Am I harming the Beast?
Is a safer option linseed oil?

A tablespoonful in a couple of gallons won't hurt.
I ran my (2-smoke) Greeves scrambler on 'R' and it did gum up the insides but it didn't really matter as I usually had to strip the engine anyway between meetings.
