Like you say Mick there doesn't seem to be any option for getting the clip in the wrong place.
I'll take the carb off and take a look, whilst its off I'll check the flange too Andy, and also check the float is sound.
I want to get to the bottom of this, because it spoils riding it with it feeling like it's about to run out of fuel all the time.

A couple more considerations:

How worn is your carburettor, is the slide a loose fit?

If it feels like fuel starvation check inside the petrol tank for obstructions, lining becoming detached or paint overspray inside the tank lifting and blocking the fuel taps, and the vent on the petrol cap.

(NB: the latest float needles have two clip positions one for a brass float and one for a plastic one)
