Compression

Post by Pastie »

Hi All, I've just bought a 1953 AJS 16MS and I'm finding my way round the bike. I've just done a cold compression test, and I'm getting about 100PSI. Does this sound about right? Also, can anyone recommend the right engine and gearbox oil. Many thanks in advance.

Compression sounds OK. You'll find all you need to know in the manual Here:

Welcome Pastie,

I've been using Halfords Classic 20W-50 for both in mine, as I believe many do, and it seems to have been OK. I do change the oil quite regularly (~1500 miles).

Whether it is absolutely the right oil to use is of course I suspect a subject for great debate but at least it is very easy to get hold of!

Now for the great oil debate, straight SAE for singles and multigrade for twins. I'll duck down now!
