Torque settings HW Single
1949 AJS 350.
Are there any factory torque settings / values for the crank case stud nuts and the four cylinder head bolts, re a 1949 HW 350 single ? (cast iron head)
Thanks.
Mac.

Re: Torque settings HW Single
I'm not aware of any documentation on torque values except as below in the Army Workshop manual. From the books and articles of ex-employees it seems that assembly workers specialised in a particular 'job' for many years using the same (length) spanners every day and judged the force needed by feel/experience.
There's an interesting practical article on stripping/reassembling singles engines by Ken Bryant (ex ITMA on these forums) which suggests 30 ft/lbs for the head bolts (and 10 ft/lbs for the rocker cover) which you may find useful. I've only recently used a torque wrench for head bolts and tightened them to 30 and never re-checked/re-tightened them. Don't forget to anneal (soften) the head gasket - even a new one. The article is here:

Here's the Army G3L workshop manual which has very comprehensive info on sizes, tolerances etc.
I've noticed that for the head bolts it says: EDIT: and for the crankpin nuts: It's in the Army manual here:

Well I didn't use a torque wrench but did anneal the new gasket. Didn't recheck tightness, no problems since. 2000+ miles.

Re: Torque settings HW Single
Head bolts are definitely 36 ft lbs; the figure of 15 ft lbs for the rocker bolts comes to mind but this needs confirming. Andy

I've got a figure somewhere in my 1957 workshop manual. Cylinder head bolts 35 ft lbs tightened diagonally (not the long one).

Tried to tighten them diagonally but then found my arms are not long enough to reach them. Need a longer wrench.spookefoote1956 wrote:I've got a figure somewhere in my 1957 workshop manual. Cylinder head bolts 35 ft lbs tightened diagonally (not the long one).

Re: Torque settings HW Single
My torque settings, medium spanner hard as I can for head bolts, small spanner on the rockerbox with a little less effort.
