21" spoke length for 1958 30CS model

Post by matchless »

Does anyone know the correct spoke length for a 21" front wheel (58 30CS). The parts list only gives the part number as 021153 but no length.
Your assistance will be appreciated.

first question is what hub do you have? I rebuilt my 21" front wheel for my G80cs with an alloy rim from Hagon, mine has a full width turned off hub, not that the tuning off will make any difference to the spokes, I told 'em what I had and they supplied all materials, give them a mail perhaps. kind regards

Due to the differences in my 1958 hub diameters, It looks like the rear spokes from a standard 19" rear wheel will fit the 21" front wheel ? Can anyone confirm this ? Does anyone know the recommended length of the spokes for a 1958 21" front wheel?

Hi

The rear spokes may be a larger gauge than the fronts - sets are readily available in the UK:

Guess not so in Oz

Seems unlikely to me. The brake shoes are the same size front and back so I am assuming the hubs are a similar diameter. If so a 21 inch wheel would need longer spokes. It may depend on whether you have a standard rim or an alloy one. I have a 58 G11CS with 21 inch front wheel. Cannot offer to take the wheel apart to measure the spoke but I could measure the exposed length and you could add the depth in the hub and in the nipple end.

Hi

The rear hub is significantly smaller diameter to the front, (the rear brake drum is incorporated into the drive sprocket not the hub).

I could measure an old 19" rear spoke if that will help.

So as is often the case I was wrong. Lack of knowledge has never stopped me expressing an opinion! So having measured my 1958 G11CS spokes I reckon the 21 inch front and 19 inch rear would have the same length spokes. Could not measure the actual spoke but from where the spoke leaves the hub to where the nipple leaves the rim is 16cms. My rear wheel is only 18 inch, (better tyre choice) so I measured a standard road 19 inch rear. Same part measured 16cms. My bike has full width hubs and chromed steel rims. Hope that helps.

In my limited experience of building spoked wheels the hub diameter has little affect on spoke length, as the spokes leave the hub at more of a tangent than radially if that makes any sense.

Harry, I would have thought that if the hubs are full width then you are correct but half width surely the side without the brake drum would be longer. kind regards
