1 1/4 fork ID

Post by Andy51 »

Hi All, I am refurbishing a set of 1 1/4 in forks that came with my '54 AJS 18S. I have no idea what year they are, and have replaced them with a correct pair of 1 1/8 forks. During an idle moment I thought I'd sort them out, they were seized almost solid. Having got them apart, I need new plastic bushes and oil seals (the old bushes were white nylon and were very tight on the stanchions, almost locking them solid). However, I see from the parts lists that the bushes and seals for '55 forks were different to those for later years. How can I tell which year forks I have?

If you are replacing bushes and seals, it doesn't matter. All the '55 on forks are the same, but '55 fork bushes had a thicker top lip and had to be matched to a thinner oilseal. So you can use later bushes and seals together.
