According to a chap on another forum who is know for cleaning and polishing is bike (yes, it's modern but still has paintwork) he uses Tesco furniture polish applied with a micro-fibre cloth.
Furniture polish is also good for getting rain to run off visors and doesn't adversely affect the plastic, but I use Mr Sheen as I don't shop much in Tesco.

Will last you forever and its good stuff I have tried various polishes and this is the best in my opinion. The AJ is in its 6th winter outside under bike covers and this and ACF 50 has kept it as it was the day after I finished restoring it

Hi
As previously mentioned, i think keeping the shiny side up is relatively easy. My brother in law has done car body work over the years and explains that a real deep shine develops after many polishes as you 'flatten out' the miniscule ripples in the paint.
Prevention of corrosion is perhaps the tricky bit! As a poor recently started electronics engineer I was trying to run my enduro bike on a budget and post washing I had a garden sprayer type bottle and mixed up about a 5-1 mix of diesel and engine oil. This was applied to the non plastic bits and proved very good at saving the cases.
For polish, I think they are all loaded with silicone which is ok untill you want to paint !!
Regards kk
Top tip - if it needs more than 2 bolts to hold it on, its probably important...
