Dimensions of 250 Lightweight head steady?
Does anyone have a 250 Lightweight head steady they could measure up for me?
I need to know the distance from the frame fixing bolt to the base and also whether the frame fixing is central or offset from the head fixing...

Re: Dimensions of 250 Lightweight head steady?
I cant see on my lightweights, however, on heavyweights the bracket is L shaped. The upward part of the L is vertical with the centre of the tube clip that bolts on to it. On heavyweights the bottom part of the L has 2 holes to pick up on the 2 rocker box studs with extended thread for nuts to fix. So the head fixing is not vertical with the centre of the tube. Not sure if the lightweight has a head bracket like that. You should be able to see on your bike. By taking a vertical line down from the tube centre, then discover if the bracket needs to be L shape. Also work out hole dimension from the centre line to the rocker box fixing stud. Hope this helps. This is the heavyweight bracket.

I'm pretty certain it's U-shaped on a Lightweight. My guess is that the 350 steady will be slightly different, because the engine is taller. I reckon I can make one.
The engine is out of the bike at the moment, so knowing the original dimensions will make this easier...

In this 1960 L/W parts list for the G2 and G5
http://archives.jampot.dk/book/Spares_l ... s_List.pdf
it doesn't mention a frame clip but does list a 'Bolt (through frame...............'

Thanks, Spriddler. This is the part I am after:
That photo is off a 350, but according to the parts list the stay is the same. You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

Re: Dimensions of 250 Lightweight head steady?
You have the photo so you know it's shape, the base size and hole positions are determined by studs on rocker box and the overall height is about 2.5 inches, the top fixing is a 5/16" slot about 1/4" centres. It awkward to measure so I did it by eye, feels like 3/16" thick but 1/8" would do, you need to remember the studs on the rocker box are not running in line with the frame so there will be an offset.
Knock the bracket up first, bent or weld then put holes in when engine is in, hope all this makes sense.

On mine, the holes that fit onto the rocker studs are also slightly oval so there's a bit of wiggle room when fitting.cbranni wrote:You have the photo so you know it's shape, the base size and hole positions are determined by studs on rocker box and the overall height is about 2.5 inches, the top fixing is a 5/16" slot about 1/4" centres. Thanks all! I'm sure I can make something; at least I know roughly what shape of metal to start with...
