Getting my 56 M30 go faster.

Post by matchlessfranckie »

Hi.
My 1956 M30 AJS runs really well but I find it "short" Excuse my english.
I mean, when riding at 60 mph the revs are really high just like max revs acceptable for the engine before it gets damaged.
Apparently gearbox sprockets are the same on all models as rear wheel sprocket.
So I must have the wrong gear box. Ratios at least.
Also have a 57 G3 and there the fourth gear seems endless.
Am I on the right direction? Gearbox it is?
Thanks for your advice.
Kind regards
Franck.

Fit a bigger front sprocket, or a smaller rear. That will gear it up a bit depending on how many extra or less teeth. TTFN Jack

Hello Franck,
the owner's manual for 1956 Twins states for 500 & 600 :
Engine sprocket : 19,20,21
Clutch sprocket 40
Gear box sprocket 16
Rear sprocket 42.
You can deal only with engine et G.B. sprockets, as the others are always 40 and 42.
The overall ratios aren't specified in the owner's book, but you can easily calculate the engine RPM in top gear for our legal limitations. Engine sprockets are existing also in 22,23,24 teeth (this later for 650 CSR with 3.50/18 rear tyre).
I had a 1957 M 30 in 1965, and it was a very good bike which liked to be reved, far more than the 650.
I think the good target for RPM @ 90 kph must be 3500.

It may be that at some stage it had a sidecar fitted necessitating a smaller engine sprocket. A standard M30/G11 should have a 22 tooth engine sprocket: sidecar gearing used a 19 tooth one.

Please let us know what you find out - I am interested in G11 gearing too.

The 600cc (2 x 300cc cylinders) Model 30 has an almost 'square' engine (Bore 72mm x Stroke 72.8mm) and is designed to run at and deliver its max power at higher revs than the 350cc G3 which has a longer stroke engine (Bore 69mm x Stroke 92mm) and very heavy flywheels producing high torque at relatively low revs.
Max power.....
Model 30: 33hp @ 6800 rpm
G3: 16hp @ 5600 rpm

As already mentioned above, yours may be geared for a sidecar.

1956 model 30 with Burman gearbox engine sprocket 20 teeth as standard, 1957 model 30 with AMC gearbox 22 teeth as standard.
I have a 1956 model 30 and it runs smooth with 20 teeth.
best regards

If my memory works properly
Don't the Burman and AMC clutch baskets have different number of teeth .
Which will affect the overall gearing on the primary side .

You are right, Bob, 40 teeth on Burmann, 42 on AMC clutch.
